Final Grading Instructions

Please use the following instructions when completing the grade roster. Additional information regarding grading is available in the Undergraduate Catalog. If any questions or problems arise that are not addressed in these instructions, call Linda Reid at 581-1318.

  • Assigning Grades: Write a letter grade in the column titled "written grade." The grade can be written in pen or pencil. The appropriate bubble must be filled in with a No. 2 pencil. If you use plus and minus grading, fill in the bubble for the letter grade AND a "+" or "-" bubble on the same line.

List of Approved Grading Symbols and Definitions

(No definitions have been established for plus and minus grades
and there are no numeric values associated with the grades.)

    A - Superior
    B - Good
    C - Satisfactory
    D - Poor
DG - Deferred Grade (for multiple semester courses)
    F - Failure
    AU - Audited
    I - Incomplete work
    L - Stopped attending/never attended (computed as an "F")
LP - Low Pass (for pass/fail course)
    P - Passed (for pass/fail course)
R - Deferred (graduate thesis only)
T - Deferred (undergraduate thesis only)

  • No Blank Grades: All students must be graded. If unable to assign a grade, include a note with the roster explaining the reason for the grade omission.
  • Incomplete Grades: If a student has not completed the course and has requested an incomplete which you feel is justified, darken the "I" bubble and fill out the Incomplete Grade Authorization form (PDF), which is available at your department's or Dean's Office. Once the Incomplete Grade Authorization form is signed by the student and instructor, forward the form to the student's dean. (Note: Please review the incomplete policy in the Undergraduate Catalog since it is complicated and places responsibilities on both the student and instructor. Also, do not advise students to re-register for the course in a subsequent semester to complete the work.)
  • Students Not Listed on Roster: If a student is taking the course and is not shown on the Grade Roster, complete a Supplemental Grade Roster form to add the student, and paper clip it to the Grade Roster. Supplemental Grade Rosters are available at your department office or at the Office of Student Records.
  • Students Not Attending: Any registered students who have never attended or who stopped attending without officially dropping, should be considered for the "L" grade. This grade counts the same as an "F."
  • Audit Students: These students have paid tuition at the normal rate for the course and will receive a transcript entry indicating the audition. They are not required to complete assignments or take exams. The student is shown with an "AUD" in the student option column. These students should receive the grade of "AU." If they have never attended, indicate this so they can be dropped from the course.
  • Withdrawn students: Students who have officially withdrawn from the University or who withdrew from the course will have a grade ("W" or "F") in the grade column. Do not grade these students.
  • Grade Reports: Grade reports are not sent to students automatically. Students may obtain a copy of their semester grades using Web DSIS and IVR MAIN Line (581-6246).
  • Review the completed roster: Carefully check for missed entries and appropriately shaded bubbles corresponding with written grades. Sign and date the grade sheet(s) using ink.

Do not fold, staple or make any stray marks on the front or back of the form.

Please deliver (do NOT mail) grades to 100 Wingate Hall.

An after hours drop box is available in the rear door of Wingate Hall.
